Do You Need GAP Insurance?

Will Your Insurance Pay Off Your Loan If Your Car Is Totaled?

Why buy GAP?

  • It pays off your remaining loan balance should your automobile be stolen or damaged and is a total loss.
  • It clears your loan balance, allowing you to start fresh with a new vehicle purchase.
  • GAP can be included in your loan

Most people believe that if their vehicle is totaled or stolen, their primary insurance will pay off their loan balance.  Well, think again!

If your vehicle is totaled or stolen, your primary insurance carrier will usually pay only the actual cash value (current market value) of your vehicle, less your deductible.  This amount could be substantially lower than your loan balance.

The final result is a financial GAP where you must pay the difference between your loan balance and your insurance settlement, which could mean thousands of dollars out of your pocket.

GAP  (Guaranteed Auto Protection) coverage eliminates the out-of-pocket expense you would incur to pay off your loan should your vehicle be totaled or stolen.  Your loan will be paid in full, including the portion caused by your deductible, and you can move on to purchase another vehicle.

Student Loans

Important Changes To The Current Student Loan Program

On Thursday, March 26, 2010, Congress passed reconciliation legislation that would eliminate the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).  Beginning July 1, 2010 all new federal student loans will be issued via the Direct Lending program through the U.S. Government. Private lenders, such as credit unions, will no longer have a role in originating or funding Federal Stafford, PLUS or Consolidation loans beyond June 30, 2010.

As a FFELP lender, all of our pending disbursements or loans guaranteed prior to June 30, 2010 will be guaranteed, originated and disbursed through the FFEL Program. Furthermore, our outstanding loans with the Federal Student Loan Network will continue to be serviced by our business partner, Great Lakes, beyond the July 1, 2010 Direct Lending effective date.

Through June 30, 2010:  Your credit union works with Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation to offer student loans to our members.  Go to www.mygreatlakes.org for complete information and applications.

Your credit union's lender I.D. is #832233.  This number should be printed in line 11 of the Loan Application and Promissory Note.

Eligibility for a Guaranteed Student Loan is determined largely by your financial need, which is the difference between your total education cost and the amount you and your family are expected to contribute to your cost of school. Such loans are often subsidized by the Federal Government during your student years. It is your personal obligation to repay the loan at a low rate of interest beginning six months after graduation or withdrawing from school. Eligibility is determined by your school's financial aids office and application submitted by your parent(s).

If you are eligible for either the Subsidized or Unsubsidized Stafford loan, you may download one here, pick up an application at the credit union office, or call and we will mail one to you.

Your eligibility for a Plus loan has nothing to do with "need". Both self-supporting students and parents of dependent undergraduates are eligible. Interest rates are somewhat higher than Guaranteed Student Loans.

If you find the Federal program does not cover the total cost of your education, the Credit Union also participates in the State of Ohio Supplemental Student Loan Program which makes funds available to Ohio citizens who need additional funds for their undergraduate and graduate schooling.

If you are in need of the State of Ohio supplemental program, please give us a call and we will forward the appropriate forms to you.
